The Adelaide Law School prize night was held on Friday, 18 March 2011. This year a record number of prizes were awarded to the undergraduate and postgraduate students from 2010.
The Crown Solicitor, Mr Greg Parker, who had been a previous winner of many prestigious prizes including the Stow and Bennett, presented the prizes and awards. Addressing students, sponsors, family and friends he marvelled at the development of the event and reflected that his prize night involved a staff meeting where the prizes were announced. He said: “In my first couple of years at law school there was no ceremony of this type. I remember getting a letter telling me that I had won prizes. By the time I had got to third year there was a small ceremony in a room somewhere upstairs in the law school attended only by prize-winning students and some of the staff. Families were not invited. The highlight of that night was the attendance by Dame Roma Mitchell as Chancellor to award the prizes.”
Addressing the students and their families Mr Parker said: “I congratulate all the students who are to be awarded prizes tonight and also their families who will have assisted them in many ways. I know how much effort you have put in to earn such a reward.”
The Dean of Adelaide Law School, Professor John Williams, said: “We are very proud of the student who have achieved excellent results in their studies”. A diversity of prizes were presented to students including Honours, Mooting, Postgraduate, Law Students’ Society competitions and first year students.
The Dean in particular thanked the sponsors of the prizes and their generous support for Adelaide Law School students. This year’s top prize for undergraduate students, the Stow prizes were awarded to Alexandra O’Sullivan (pictured) and Monique Webber. Katherine Dini, Natasha Dixon, Peter Hagias and Fiona McDonald shared the remaining two Stow prizes.
Reflecting on the night Mr Greg Parker said: “I am very pleased to see that the Law School has maintained and enhanced the practice of conducting a formal prize giving ceremony. As well as providing public recognition for high achieving students such a well organised ceremony is very significant to their families who provide so much support and encouragement to students. “
